Visually, the result is beautiful. The title refers to the giant ceremonial Rashomon gate to the old capital city of Kyoto, now in disrepair, a symbol of chaotic times. This soaring gloomy wooden portal is featured in Julie Ray's set, rather than the mountainside of the Broadway or Shaw Fest versions. But when the gate rises for the flashback scenes, Ray's design turns to delicate, stylized panels, prettily lit by Gianni Downs. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette
